Photoelectric smoke alarms detect common home fires better

Make sure you're protected

Studies have shown that some smoke detectors sense the type of fires responsible for more damage and deaths in homes every year better than others.

Photoelectric smoke alarms:

• Much faster response to slow-smoldering type fires, both inside and outside the room the fire originates in.
• Much more immune to nuisance alarms caused by cooking odors.
• Much more sensitive to "aged” smoke.
• Slightly slower to respond to fast-flaming types of fires.

Ionization smoke alarms:

• Slightly faster response to fast-flaming type fires when placed in the room the fire originates in.
• Many times more susceptible to nuisance alarms caused by cooking odors, often prompting homeowners to disable the alarm.
• Slower to respond to larger smoke particle sizes typically associated with slow-smoldering type fires, and "aged” smoke.

Bottom line:

• Photoelectric smoke alarms detect slow-smoldering fires — the fires that cause the vast majority of fire fatalities annually — better than Ionization alarms. (NFPA and British studies)
