A home safe is designed for protecting papers from a fire or your valuables from theft in a burglary attack. This is the perfect solution for your home since a fire safe does not offer burglar protection, and a burglar safe does not offer fire protection. Home safes usually offer a one or two hour fire rating. 

There are several burglar ratings home safes offer:

• B-Rate - Minimum 1/4" steel in the body of the safe, 1/2" thick door. 
• B/C Rate - In between a B and a C rating. It has at least 1/4" steel body, 1/2" door, plus an additional 10 or 12 gauge metal layers where composite fire resistant material is also deployed.
• RSC Rating (Residential Security Container) - This is a Underwriters Laboratory (U.L.) rating. It is based on testing conducted for a net working time of five minutes, on all sides, with a range of tools. Net working time means that when the tool comes off the safe, the clock stops. An RSC rated safe is otherwise known as a TL-5.
• C-Rate - Minimum 1/2" steel in the body of the safe, 1" thick door.

Depending on how much content you are planning on storing inside will help you decide on which rating of home safe you should choose. Always think about 3-5 years in the future for the size and burglar rating you will need. You will always find more items and valuables to store inside. Since a safe is a once in a lifetime purchase, you don't want to purchase one to small, or one that will not protect the amount of value you are storing inside. Content value for a home safe ranges from $5,000 - $30,000 depending on the burglar rating.
